Kosgoda, Turtle Hatchery
Not far from Kosgoda and Bentota there are some facilities for looking after freshly hatched turtles that could scarcely live without human help. One of them is the Victor Hasselblad Turtle Hatchery to the South of Bentota.
It can be visited between 8am and 6pm.
Admission Charge- Entrance and Children half price
With a bit of luck visitors will be able to experience how the young turtles that have been given a helping hand are released back into the wild, preferably in the evenings at around 6.30pm. There are also some permanent guests such as older turtles injured by fishing nets which are being nursed back to health by the hatchery. There are 2 further facilities nearby.
Weligama to watch Dolphins and Whales
The Indian ocean is full of interesting animals. The far south of the island near Dondra Head, is an outstanding place to watch dolphins and whales. Entire schools of these marine mammals can be seen just a few miles offshore. Several tour operators run trips from Mirissa near Weligama all year round. They are definitely an absolute highlight for children.
